UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) reported that a UW campus group last week hosted a panel discussion about free speech on campus. The panel discussed UW's new Statement of Principles.

Libby Thorson, UW assistant dean of students, was interviewed by WPR to discuss the campus community’s involvement with “Denim Day” -- a day to raise sexual violence awareness.

The Casper Star-Tribune interviewed Lusha Tronstad, with UW’s Wyoming Natural Diversity Database and Department of Zoology and Physiology, about her team’s research on how Yellowstone Lake’s ice cover is unchanged despite a warming climate. The scientists’ research paper was published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. To read UW’s release, click here.

Virginia Vicenti, UW professor emeritus, was interviewed for a USA Today story on Wyoming’s growing aging population. Her comments focused on how as more Cowboy State residents age, the cost of care will increase.

The Western Producer, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, reported that UW researchers devised a way to control grasshoppers on pastures with a smaller volume of pesticides. Since grasshoppers naturally hop, farmers apply an insecticide to one strip on a pasture, leaving the adjacent strip unsprayed. That alternating pattern continues across the field, so only half the pasture receives insecticide while still killing most of the grasshoppers.

UW’s American Heritage Center (AHC) will open its Stan Lee exhibition this week, which will feature personal works from Lee as well as a number of records, films and draft comic strips sent to the center by the creator of Spiderman. The AHC will host a related event, Supercon, in late August, according to WPR.

Sheridan Media interviewed Chad Baldwin, UW associated vice president for Institutional Communications and Marketing, about Bradley Rettler, UW associate professor, who recently spoke at the international Bitcoin Policy Summit in Washington, D.C.

David Fay, a professor in UW’s Department of Molecular Biology, recently chaired a blue-ribbon advisory panel for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Cheyenne Post published UW’s release that noted the panel provided advice about how the NIH funds grant proposals.

The Gillette News Record featured Jim Ehrenberger, who has amassed a huge collection of photos, negatives and transparencies of trains, estimated at more than 100,000 artifacts. The local man’s 70-year collection has been donated to UW’s AHC, according to the article.

Kayla Clark, a UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources assistant lecturer, who also teaches graphic design classes at the university, was featured in Cowboy State Daily for her passion in the centuries-old art of printing. Clark uses her 25-year-old, 250-pound “portable” press she fondly calls “Paco.” The United Kingdom’s Invest Money republished the article.

Wyoming Livestock Roundup reported that UW’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources recently held the Navigating Western Waters Symposium -- the final installation of its Ranch Management and Agriculture Leadership Program’s Ranching in the West seminar series.

In an effort to help sheep producers around the state prepare for lambs this spring, the newly established UW Extension Sheep Task Force recently hosted a webinar to discuss innovations in the lambing barn. Wyoming Livestock Roundup published UW’s release on the program.

The Sheridan Press published UW’s release that reported a local student, Fisher Burris, is among four UW juniors who recently received a $1,000 scholarship and induction into the national Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

A UW study conducted in Sheridan helped shape new recommendations for managing the effects weevils have on alfalfa crops. According to UW’s release, published by Oil City News, the alfalfa weevils, which skeletonize the foliage of the valuable feed crop, are growing resistant to commonly used pesticides.

Northern Ag Network reported that UW’s UW Rangeland Ecology and Watershed Management Program is preparing undergraduates for success. UW’s program is among 14 undergraduate programs in North America accredited by the Society for Range Management, a professional society for land managers, ranchers, scientists, educators, students and conservationists.

UW’s Leadership Academy’s fall 2024 cohort has been announced, marking a milestone for students interested in economic and civic leadership in Wyoming. UW’s release, published by The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, noted that the program, a collaboration between the UW College of Business Center for Principle-Based Leadership and Ethics and Leadership Wyoming, promises to offer an experiential learning opportunity. County 10 reported that two local students were selected for the inaugural academy.

Wyoming News Now featured UW football player Frank “The Tank” Crum, of Laramie, who was among four Cowboys who signed undrafted rookie contracts after not being selected during last week’s NFL draft. Crum signed with the Denver Broncos.
