UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

WyoFile, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Cap City News and Cowboy State Daily were among media outlets reporting that, following UW President Ed Seidel’s recommendations, the UW Board of Trustees voted unanimously last week to close the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and reassign positions elsewhere in response to a legislative mandate. However, many of UW’s programs and activities that might be categorized under DEI will continue.

UW economist Rob Godby; Dan Noble, a former director of the Wyoming Department of Revenue; and Wenlin Liu, chief economist with the Wyoming Department of Administration and Information, helped the Wyoming Taxpayers Association with a new online calculator that calculates individual benefits the Wyoming tax structure provides to each state citizen, based on residents’ specific data, according to The Sheridan Press.

County 10 reported that the co-chairs of the Wyoming Legislature’s Select Committee on Tribal Relations plan to attend a future UW Board of Trustees meeting to discuss the potential to provide more financial support to Native American students.

UW’s feature release on Bob Finley, Fremont County Weed and Pest assistant supervisor in Dubois, who received his UW master’s degree last weekend at age 63, was published in its entirety by County 10.

The Casper Star-Tribune reported on UW’s Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality (WORTH) Initiative’s recent report that details the robust tourism industry in the state. However, WORTH’s report also indicates the need to enhance educational programs and training opportunities to sustain and expand this crucial economic sector in the Cowboy State. Dan McCoy, WORTH interim director, was quoted in the article.

UW’s WORTH Initiative and the Johnson County Tourism Association will offer a free hospitality training program next month in Buffalo. The program is open to those who work in lodging, retail or any customer service-oriented businesses and organizations, according to Sheridan Media.

The Gillette News Record interviewed David Gordon, a UW student from Gillette, about his experience launching weather balloons to track atmospheric data during the recent solar eclipse. Gordon was part of a UW research team -- known as the UW Space Cowboys -- that traveled to Bluffton, Ohio, to participate in the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project.

UW’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources recently recognized outstanding educators and staff members at an annual awards banquet. The Cheyenne Post published UW’s release announcing all of the year-end recipients.

The Greybull Standard published a list of UW Extension “Walks with an Expert” events this summer in Big Horn County. The program offers participants the opportunity to experience remarkable history, scientific wonders and hidden treasures.
