There are numerous scholarship opportunities for UW students. Wyoming residents can benefit from the Hathaway and President's Promise and Trustee's Pride scholarships. Non-residents are eligible for the Peak Achievement scholarships.
Check with the UW Financial Aid Office for general scholarship opportunities. You can apply for several at one time with only one application!
Listed below are some opportunities that are have a more specific international focus.
A&S/Saunders-Walter Study Abroad Scholarship. Scholarships are available to students majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences who intend to travel during 2010. Deadline: Oct 16, 2009. Awards will be announced by November 6, 2009.
International Programs (Knight Hall 248) administers the Study Abroad Program at UW and offers the Dick and Lynne Cheney Study Abroad Grant, which is awarded for fall, spring and summer study abroad. The office also has a listing of many other scholarships for study abroad experiences. Fall 2009 Deadline: Oct 2.
Two $1500 awards will be given to outstanding students participating in a study abroad experience. Applications and requirements are available in International Programs, Knight Hall 248. Deadline: March
Merit-based scholarships are available to participate in intenstive language programs overseas for the 2010 summer, semester and 2010-2011 academic year programs in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Russian and Turkish. Adam Liebman, a Master's candidate, received a National Security Education Program (NSEP), David L. Boren Fellowship for 2007-8 academic year. Adam will study Chinese language at Yunnan University in Kunming, China. While in China he will gather data for his thesis research project , the Chinese public’s attitudes and actions towards environmental issues. |
Boren Scholarships provides up to $20,000 for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad. NSEP awards scholarships to American students for study in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, the NIS, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Deadline: Feb 10, 2010.
Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interest, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. Deadline: Jan 28, 2010.

This award is at least $1000 annually for undergraduate students who have been accepted into an international study abroad or student exchange program. Applicants must be a full-time student at the time they apply and plan to study full-time when abroad. They must carry at least a 2.5 GPA and have completed at least 12 hours of coursework at the University of Wyoming. Applications are due June 1st for the Fall Semester and December 1st for the Spring Semester. Students need to complete the application form and provide three letters of reference (two from academic sources). Your personal letter should describe reasons for seeking financial assistance and what you hope to accomplish in the study abroad experience. Offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means. The Gliman scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. http://www.iie.org//programs/gilman/index.html
Each year the Honors Program awards more than $200,000 in scholarships to students who are beginning their undergraduate education or who are entering the University as transfer students. Click here for more information.
This scholarship supports study or a project in a student’s major field at a university in another country (over 70) for one academic year. The Christianson Grant is open to individuals who have sought out and arranged their own work abroad programs. Proposed programs must be at least sixth months in length and emphasize a work component. The grant program does not support independent research projects or academic study abroad programs. International Service Learning Alliance provides long-term internship and work abroad programs.
