THE SCOPES MONKEY TRIAL

A New Play Based on the Actual Transcripts of The Scopes Trial

By William Missouri Downs

This not Inherit the Wind, the 1955 play written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee (the movie version, which came out in 1960, starred Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly). Inherit the Wind used only a handful of lines from the original trial. It was not a dramatization of the trial, nor was it a history lesson. Unlike Inherit the Wind this play has been drawn from the actual 1925 trial transcripts. It concerned several issues: the rights of taxpayers to control what is taught in public schools, separation of church and state, academic freedom and the tensions between religion and science.
