Dance
The dance program offers BFA, BA, and Minor options and provides
extensive training in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz and two levels
each in Tap, Vertical Dance, and Choreography/Composition.
Students may also take courses in Pilates, Kinesiology for
Dance, Dance History, Partnering and/or Pas de Deux, and
Character and Historical Dance. Pedagogy courses are offered
through independent study.
Our dance majors and minors have many opportunities for
performance and advanced training during their college career.
Two Main Stage dance concerts are produced each academic year
featuring faculty and guest artists' choreography. Other
performance opportunities are offered by dance tours in schools
throughout the state, participation in musicals or operas, and
in student showcases of original work. Student choreography is
presented each semester under the Choreography/Composition
sequence, and elaborate creative endeavors are designed and
supervised within an independent study. Talented undergraduate
choreographers are often selected to work on Main Stage musicals
and operas. Our students also participate at American College
Dance Festival Association's (ACDFA) Northwest Conference each
spring, both as performers and choreographers. Each summer, our
dancers can take part in the 10-day intensive Snowy Range Dance
Festival here at UW, which features many outstanding guest
artists and dance faculty such as Cleo Parker Robinson Dance
Ensemble, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Jump Rhythm Jazz Project,
Peter Pucci, Susan Israel Massey, Yoav Kaddar, Keith Saunders,
and Lawrence Jackson. In addition to daily technique
classes, students have the opportunity to perform in a student
showcase as well as a final concert.
