Digital Initiatives

What We Do

The mission of the UW Libraries Digital Collections Office is to help foster, create, and preserve open data, research, and scholarship at the University of Wyoming. The Digital Collections Office has two primary responsibilities. The first is collection building and digitization, and the second is supporting UW’s scholarly output. Faculty and staff are happy to consult and work with the University of Wyoming community on a variety of projects.

Digital Collections operates and maintains the various Libraries digital repositories, including our digital collections, research data, and scholarly outputs. They also work to preserve and convert analog content of all kinds to digital formats. The ultimate goal of these efforts are the open and broad dissemination of information online. Learn more about our Digital Collections.

The second area of emphasis is supporting scholarly output, mainly through our work with the Digital Scholarship Center (DSC). A new service operating within UW Libraries, the DSC provides technology and training for work on digital projects by UW community members.

Featured Projects

  • Black and white scan of the Northern Wyoming Herald.

    Wyoming Digital Newspaper Project

The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) is an ongoing venture between the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of Congress, and cultural institutions across the United States to create a public, searchable database of U.S. newspapers.

The University of Wyoming received a grant to digitize their state newspaper collection in 2019, with the goal of submitting approximately 100,000 pages from various Wyoming newspaper titles in the first phase.

  • Sketchfab Logo

    Sketchfab (3D Imaging + Scanning)

The UW Libraries' Digital Collections Office has made a substantial investment in equipment, software, and expertise in order to build 3D digital collections for the UW community. We are able to scan small and medium-sized objects using either photogrammetry or structured/white light scanning.

In addition to imaging specimens, we offer an institutionally licensed 3D content hosting platform (controlled and paid for by the Libraries) called Sketchfab. Models available on Sketchfab are viewable on computers, phones, and tablets of all kinds and can be annotated.

  • Pressbooks logo.

    UW Libraries Pressbooks

The UW Pressbooks Network is a user-friendly web-based publishing tool that allows authors to import content and export the resulting publication to various formats, including EPUB and PDF.

Moreover, it provides a seamless experience for resource creation, with compatible plugins that enable the inclusion of multimedia, interactive assessment, and web annotation.
