Associated Students of the Performing Arts (ASOPA)

ASOPA is a student organization within the Department of Theatre and Dance which promotes effective communication between students and faculty, enhances the academic, performance, and social areas of student life and provides opportunities for professional exposure. ASOPA is especially valuable to new students in acquainting them with the Department and the University as a whole. The Department of Theatre and Dance provides a close knit and cooperative environment in which to work, and ASOPA enhances that atmosphere. In recent years, ASOPA has been heavily involved in producing original student work, and in 1995, ASOPA, in conjunction with the department of Theatre and Dance, produced the national short play award winner for the American College Theatre Festival. The show was one of six plays chosen from over 900 entries to be performed at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Theatre and Dance majors are usually heavily involved in this important organization which holds elections each spring, and can be joined at any time. Aspiring playwrights generally find ASOPA an invaluable tool for showcasing their new work, and actors, dancers, and technicians all find numerous opportunities to perform and design.
