William Missouri Downs has authored 20 full-length plays.  They include: Innocent Thoughts the winner of the National Playwrights Award, Jewish Sports Heroes and Texas Intellectuals which took first place at the Mill Mountain Theatre's Festival Of New Plays, Seagulls In A Cherry Tree the winner of the Larry Corse Prize for playwriting and Kabuki Medea which won the Bay Area Critics Award for best production in San Francisco and the Jefferson Award for best production in Chicago. Bill has had nearly 100 productions of his plays from New York to Singapore and from Israel to South Africa, including LORT theatres like the Kennedy Center and the Berkeley Rep. He is a full voting member of both the Dramatists Guild (DGA) and the Writers Guild Of America (WGA).

Bill is co-author of the books Screenplay: Writing The Picture and Naked Playwriting: The Art, The Craft and The Life Laid Bare published by Silman/James - you can find them at your local Barnes & Noble or on Amazon.com. He also co-authored Playwriting: From Formula To Form published by Harcourt. His latest books are Experiencing The Art Of Theatre & The Art Of Theatre - Then and Now published by Wadsworth.

In Hollywood he was a staff writer on the NBC sitcom My Two Dads (which starred Paul Reiser). He also wrote for Amen (Sherman Hemsley), Fresh Prince Of Bel Air (Will Smith) and sold the movie Executive Privilege to Imagine Films. He also won the Jack Nicholson Award for screenwriting.

Bill holds an M.F.A. in acting from the University of Illinois and an M.F.A. in screenwriting from U.C.L.A.  He was trained in playwriting at the Circle Rep in New York City.  Bill lives in Wyoming.
