MISSION

The Department of Psychology at the University of Wyoming aspires to be a premier department in the social and behavioral sciences, in which all students, faculty, and staff can achieve their full potential in an atmosphere of inclusion, mutual respect and equity, supportive learning opportunities, intellectual rigor, and technical competence. To this end, we promote an understanding of the diversity of human behavior, emotion, cognition, and culture through our strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service.

In the exercise of our primary mission the Department of Psychology will:

• Provide a high-quality undergraduate major that provides all students with training in psychological theory and methods, creates life-long learners, and prepares students for highly competitive post-baccalaureate academic programs as well as various employment opportunities in the state, region, and nation.

• Provide courses that promote understanding and appreciation of the richness and full diversity of human experience, including behavioral and psychological processes of relevance to the educational programs of other University of Wyoming academic units.

• Serve geographically bound psychology undergraduate majors through our distance programs.

• Provide graduate training for doctoral students in clinical, social, cognitive, and legal psychology who will pursue careers and attain positions of leadership in academic, governmental, industry, and service fields.

• Engage in basic and applied research that will yield new, important knowledge in our field and has the potential for translation into practice at the local, state, national, and international levels for the promotion of equity, justice, and the welfare of all people.

• Provide service to the state of Wyoming through faculty consultation and collaborative partnership with various Wyoming public and private agencies.

• Provide clinical services to meet the needs of a diverse public across the UW campus, community, state, and world.
