    Rhoda O. Lewis Student Award

    The R. O. Lewis Student Fund of the George C. Frison Institute provides support to nontraditional undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a degree with a focus on archaeology at the University of Wyoming. The disbursement of funds will be by the Frison Institute Advisory committee. Any request related to degree completion will be considered, including book purchases, travel to meetings, fieldwork, and labwork needs. Available funds will be determined and distributed on a regular basis (semester or yearly) based on income generated by the R. O. Lewis Fund share of the Frison Institute endowment.

    1. Letter explaining the nature of your non-traditional status (such as: “I returned to school to study archeology after raising a family…” or “After a career in aerospace engineering I decided to pursue studies in archeology…” or whatever describes you status as a nontraditional student).  Please discuss your reasons for pursuing archeology and the intended use of the award (such as books, travel to conference). 12 point font, double space, one page.

    2. Please state separately - Your GPA.

    3. Your status in the program (freshmen, sophomore…1st year graduate studies…).

    4. Your career goals.

    5. Other Awards and Scholarship, and amounts, you have been awarded over the past two years.

    6. Letter of recommendation from one faculty member (half page, 12, point font, double spaced).

    Other scholarships available on a yearly basis from the Wyoming Archaeological Society, Wyoming Association of Professional Archaeologists, and Loveland Archaeological Society.  Announcements posted in spring.
    Deadline is April 7.

     

    Jason C. Reher Memorial Fund

    Available to: Undergraduate or graduate Anthropology students.
    Provided by: Charles and Sandra Reher; for donations see Jason C. Reher Memorial Fund.
    Number of awards: Varies, but normally one research grant (up to $2500) and one fellowship grant (awarded by the faculty).

    Anne Slater Memorial Award

    Available to:  Applicants must be regular (tenure or tenure-track) Department of Anthropology faculty members (including those with split appointments with other UW departments), graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, or undergraduate majors.  Anthropologists fully affiliated with other departments, adjunct faculty, graduate students in other departments, anthropology minors are not eligible.  Department of Anthropology students and faculty or APRS primarily working in other subfields may apply for funding contributing to a specific project that is cultural or linguistic in nature. 
    Provided by: The Anne Slater Memorial Fund.
    Purpose:  With a focus on linguistic and cultural anthropology, the fund is designed to defray the cost of attendance at conferences, research projects, or other departmental activities.
    Number of awards: Varies, individuals may only receive one award per year.
    Value: Funding requests should be a maximum of $500 for students and $1,000 for faculty.
    Selected by: Cultural and linguistic anthropology faculty committee.
    Application Process: Deadlines are in September in the fall and in March in the spring. Detailed CFPs are distributed to the anthropology student and faculty email list servs in advance of these deadlines. Applicants should submit a letter of request to Dr. Nikolas Sweet (nsweet1@uwyo.edu), including:
    • Plan for the use of the funds (maximum one-page single-spaced)
    • Budget
    • Proof of invitation or paper acceptance (for conference costs)
    • Information about other possible or secured sources of funding
    • The name and contact information for an advisor/supervisor who could provide a reference for the proposed project (only for undergraduates, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students)
    Reporting: Recipients are required to submit a one-page summary of the use of funds and results of the funded activity within three months of completion of the project or attendance at meetings.  Anyone failing to complete such a summary after receiving Slater funds will be ineligible for a future award.
