Anthropology

Undergraduate Degree Programs

We offer a B.A. with a major in anthropology and a minor in general anthropology; the BA covers the four subfields of anthropology.

Undergraduate Major (38 hours)  New for Fall 2020
Undergraduate Minor (18 hours)
Museum Studies Minor (21 hours)

This list is complete as of Fall 2020.  For a complete list of course offerings from the Department of Anthropology, see the General Bulletin.

Note: The Anthropology major was redesigned, and the new major requirements apply to students who declared their major during or after the Fall 2020 semester. Students who declared their Anthropology major before that time can switch to the new major by filling out a Request to Move Forward Catalog form from the Registrar’s Office.

Undergraduate Major Course Requirements
(For students who declared their major during Fall 2020 or later)

We require all Anthropology majors to take a series of core classes beginning with the introductory sequence, which includes introductory courses in all four fields of anthropology (ANTH 1100, 1200, 1300, 2000). Majors also must complete at least 25 credits of upper division (3000+) coursework within the major including at least one upper division course in at least three of the four subfields as listed below. Additional requirements include one of two methods classes and two semesters of a single foreign language:

  • Introduction to Anthropology Research Methods (ANTH 3310) or Ethnographic Methods (ANTH 3300)
  • Two semesters of a single foreign language.
  • Anthropology majors must take two additional science (PN) courses because ANTH 1100 and 1300 cannot be used to fulfill the USP PN requirement for Anthropology majors.
  • A course in statistics (e.g., STAT 2050 or 2070) is recommended but not required.
  • A third semester of a foreign language is also recommended.

The Anthropology Department offers a large suite of electives that undergrads can choose to take if they desire to further than anthropological education. See the course offerings in the General Bulletin for a complete listing.

** For an anthropology course to count toward your major requirements, you must pass the course with a grade of C- or better.**

* You are required to complete total of 18 hours for a minor in anthropology. If one of your introductory courses is ANTH 1100, Introduction to Biological Anthropology, you will need 11 hours of upper division credit. If you take two of the other introductory courses, you will need 12 upper division hours.

Museum Studies Minor

The Museum Studies minor introduces undergraduates to the history, theory, and practice of museums and collections. Courses encourage interdisciplinary thinking about the theoretical, historical and contemporary roles of museums and curatorial institutions in society. Through the minor, students learn about the preservation, collection, interpretation, and exhibition of art, anthropological, historical and scientific materials for the public audience.

Students majoring in Art, Anthropology, History, or any other major in the Humanities, Physical Sciences, Education, or Business can enhance their area of specialization with the Museum Studies minor.
