Pat Guthrie Teaching Gallery
The Pat Guthrie Teaching Gallery is designed to meet the needs of the academic community but it is also open to the public. Each semester, up to four faculty from any academic discipline may request to use a wall in the teaching gallery and select artwork from our permanent collection that is specific to their course content.
The Teaching Gallery provides a glimpse into the broad range of courses offered across campus and a window into the many ways the Art Museum supports UW’s academic mission. Student projects and public presentations also create the possibility of dialogue among faculty, students and members of the community.
The course explores why a woman, Louisa Swain, was able to break out of her 19-century birdcage to embrace advances in women’s rights, starting in Wyoming and continuing worldwide. The course examines monuments and other visual propaganda from 1860 to the present, such as works in the Art Museum collection, as well as in imagery of marches, demonstrations, and campaigns, in conjunction with the 150 Years of Wyoming Women’s Suffrage celebration. Students will help plan and participate in the coinciding interdisciplinary conference, “Votes for Women on the Northern Plains.”

Women in the West explores the roots of society’s marginal historical depiction of women in the American West from the colonial period through the twentieth century. Students develop a multi-dimensional understanding of women’s roles using an interdisciplinary approach from the perspectives of race, class, ethnicity, and gender.

Reading Text(iles) equips students to navigate our image-rich society by focusing on the role of textiles in contemporary art and culture. Themes such as narrative, community, gender, and activism are explored through the lens of fabric with critical analysis of images and text. The course culminates with a hands-on, collaborative project that allows students to consider how an everyday medium like fabric might be used as a means of art-making, communication, and social change.

Exhibitions planning for the teaching gallery begins a minimum of one semester in
advance. The teaching gallery is intended for classes that will require students to
visit the museum multiple times throughout the semester and complete an assignment
that incorporates themes, ideas, and content related to the works on view.
Faculty may schedule class visits to the gallery, arrange meetings with museum education
and curatorial staff, and encourage students to engage with the artwork independently
outside of class time. The artwork is available to students throughout the semester
for use during the museum’s public hours.
