About the Program

Biomedical sciences is the study of human biological processes; the complex interactions between physiological, genetic and environmental factors that influence disease and health. It spans the spectrum from fundamental discovery to innovation and application.

The Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program is designed to position graduates for long-term competitive success in the rapidly changing and multifaceted health-related arena in the 21st century. It is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program, making connections between various disciplines to gain new insights, discover and apply new knowledge, and promote self-directed, life-long learning. Dr. Yu Song received her doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis on sports and injury biomechanics under the supervision of Dr. Boyi Dai’s (Division of Kinesiology and Health, College of Health Sciences, UW) in Spring 2023. Her research resulted in 15 peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals related to sports medicine, and she is a first-author on eight of these publications.  Dr. Song also received numerous honors and awards (local, national, and international) during her graduate education, which includes National Doctoral Scholar Award Honorable mention by the American Kinesiology Association, ‘The most Amazing Podium Presentation Award’ by the Rocky Mountain American Society of Biomechanics, and first prize for oral presentation in Sports Rehabilitation in the Asian Federation of Sprots Medicine.

Dr. Song currently is an Assistant Professor (https://hses.ku.edu/people/yu-song) and Director in the Biomechanics Laboratory (https://hses.ku.edu/research/labs/biomechanics) in the Department of Health, Sport, & Exercise Sciences at the University of Kansas (KU). Her research interests are anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury mechanism, ACL re-injury risk factors, and jump-landing and direction-changing mechanics. She collaborates with the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Research Team in KU Medical Center for research activities and provide services to the Kansas City Current Women’s Soccer Team for functional movement evaluation.

Dr. Yinan Hua graduated from the Biomedical Science PhD Program under the supervision of Dr. Sree Nair in December 2014. She published her research in top-tier biomedical journals including Hypertension, Aging cell, and Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. She received the outstanding dissertation award from the University of Wyoming. She then did her post-doctoral fellowship at National Institutes of Health from 2015 to 2017. Dr. Hua pursued her medical residency specialized in Pathology at Baylor Scott and White Health, Texas A&M Medical School from 2019 to 2023, followed by a clinical fellowship specialized in Cytopathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. She will be joining Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Medical School in July 2024 as an attending pathologist and assistant professor.
