About

Owen R. Phillips received his Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University in 1980. He began teaching at the University of Wyoming in 1985. In 1988 he was promoted to associate professor, and became a full professor in 1995. After 34 years in the Department of Economics, Professor Phillips retired in May 2019. His teaching focus was in undergraduate microeconomics and undergraduate and graduate industrial organization. He published three editions of a textbook in microeconomic theory and more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Review, The Rand Journal, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. His research dealt with noncompetitive behavior in oligopoly markets and in negotiations. Many of his papers analyzed data from economics experiments. During his career he served on the staff of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, and was a visiting professor at the Harvard Business School. For more than 15 years, Professor Phillips held administrative posts in the University of Wyoming, College of Business, nine years as department chair of economics and finance, and six years as associate dean for faculty.
