UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Denver7 News featured a segment on the rising cost of a college education facing Colorado students and their parents. The broadcast included how Colorado families are finding it more affordable to attend colleges out of state through the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program. Through WUE, a student from Colorado could attend UW for $8,438 per year in tuition, according to the television report.

A new set of maps that document the movements of ungulates was published last week in the fourth volume of the “Ungulate Migrations of the Western United States,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Matt Kauffman, a wildlife biologist with the USGS Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at UW, is the report’s lead author. Earth.com published a similar article.

Dezeen interviewed Yi-Ling Chen, a UW School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies associate professor, about Taiwan’s foray into one of the world’s most ambitious social housing programs. Chen’s research includes studying Taiwanese housing policies. Dezeen is an architecture, interiors and design magazine.

With help from Max Gilbraith, UW’s Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium coordinator, students and others were able to watch last week’s solar eclipse safely at Prexy’s Pasture, according to Wyoming Public Media.

The Chronicle-Telegram, in Elyria, Ohio, reported that a weather balloon launched by UW’s Space Cowboys during the recent eclipse was found on Elyria City Schools property. The balloon was part of the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project, featuring 53 teams composed of more than 700 students from 75 colleges and universities. The UW team sent up one balloon every hour, starting April 7, from the campus of Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio.

Legendary mariachi singer Aída Cuevas will perform this week as part of the UW Buchanan Center Special Events program. Cuevas also will give a public lecture. Cuevas, dubbed “The Queen of Mariachi,” is one of the most important voices in traditional Mexican music, with a career spanning 46 years and 41 album releases, according to UW’s release published by The Laramie Boomerang.

Goshen County News Now published UW’s release announcing that the UW Ranch Management and Agricultural Leadership Program will host a leadership symposium on the UW campus next week. The symposium is titled “Navigating Western Waters: Addressing Water Challenges in the Western Region.” Tri-State Livestock News also published UW’s release.

The Gillette News Record published UW’s release noting that numerous Gillette junior high and high school students did well at UW’s annual World Languages Day. The event drew 285 students from 14 junior high and high schools from across the state. Students competed in language competitions and an art competition.

UW’s collegiate wool judging team competed in three regional contests this year, producing strong results, according to Oil City News, which published UW’s release on the team.

WyoToday Media published UW’s release announcing that UW Extension’s Sheep Task Force will offer a free webinar next week focusing on innovation in the lambing barn.
