UW Libraries Digital Scholarship Center Hosts Open October

University of Wyoming Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Center (DSC) is hosting “Open October,” a series of virtual programs focusing on open access and open education initiatives.

Open scholarship initiatives, such as WyoScholar, offer open access to research, resources and publications. Open access allows Wyoming residents -- as well as scholars from around the world -- access to UW-created research and resources. UW Libraries also partners with publishers to make open access publishing easier for UW authors.

Additionally, since 2017, UW Libraries has supported open education initiatives via alternative textbook grants, which are awarded to instructors who adopt, adapt or create new open textbooks or other materials for their courses. The alternative textbooks resulting from the grants awarded so far this year are projected to save UW students more than $18,800 per semester.

“Open scholarship not only makes University of Wyoming research publicly accessible, but also increases the impact of faculty research,” says Chealsye Bowley, digital scholarship librarian. “We’re excited to engage with the university community during October on events centering around open access, open data and open education to learn together how to get the most impact out of our scholarship and teaching.”

“Open October” programs include:

-- Monday, Oct. 11, 1-2 p.m.: “Introduction to Open Access” will discuss open access archiving and publishing.

-- Thursday, Oct. 14, 2-3 p.m.: “How To Be an Open Scholar” will explore open access, open data and open pedagogy.

-- Monday, Oct. 18, 10-11 a.m.: “Copyright and Your Rights” will offer insight into how copyright impacts academic publishing and how authors can retain copyright when publishing.

-- Tuesday, Oct. 19, 4-5 p.m.: Those who have questions about alternative textbook grants can join this Zoom drop-in hour.

-- Thursday, Oct. 21, 2-3 p.m.: “Introduction to Open Access” will discuss open access archiving and publishing.

-- Friday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Those who have questions about alternative textbook grants can join these Zoom drop-in hours.

-- Tuesday, Oct. 26, 10-11 a.m.: “How To Be an Open Scholar” will explore open access, open data and open pedagogy.

Additionally, this month will feature Zoom drop-in hours for WyoScholar-related questions Mondays from 2-4 p.m. and weekly open research lunch meetups via Zoom Wednesdays starting Oct. 13 from noon-1 p.m. The DSC also is offering Zoom drop-in hours for digital scholarship questions Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-noon this fall.
