World Language and Culture Intensive Summer Camp July 18

Seven different language courses will be offered during a summer camp July 18-30 at the University of Wyoming.

The free public World Language and Culture Intensive Summer Camp sessions will be offered on different days and at different times. Attendees can participate in person or virtually. Similar courses are offered during the fall and summer semesters through the World Language and Culture Program (WLCP).

“To make it accessible for everyone, we are offering hybrid sessions so that our state can benefit from the camp,” says Dilnoza Khasilova, WLCP founder. “We are pleased to offer such a unique program to our Laramie, UW and Wyoming communities, and beyond.”

Courses offered will be in Arabic, Armenian, German, Korean, Spanish, Turkish and Uzbek.

The program is supported through Wyoming Humanities and Ellbogen Foundation grants; various UW partners, including the Global Engagement Office (WyoGlobal); and Access the World with World Languages and Cultures (AWWLC). It is organized by Khasilova, a WyoGlobal alumna and UW Global Engagement Fellow.

“AWWLC is a volunteer and service-learning program that offers free world language and culture classes -- locally and around the U.S. and world -- in both face-to-face and virtual contexts,” Khasilova says.

In an informal setting, learners interact with their native-speaking instructors to design an authentic, contextualized, “hands-on/minds-on” and self-paced world language and culture curriculum. Class participants will learn and explore seven common topics that are necessary in daily life and travel. The same topics will be offered across all language sessions.

“The goal of the first World Language and Culture Intensive Summer Camp is to bridge cross-cultural gaps and develop awareness of the languages and cultures of the world, including less commonly taught languages in an authentic context,” Khasilova says.
