State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
UW graduate student Ryan Sedgeley was among several people interviewed nationwide by The BBC on what changes they had made to their Thanksgiving plans and how they felt about 2020’s pared-down holiday season.
EurekAlert! and Science Daily noted that UW Professor Jonathan Naughton and Charles Meneveau, from Johns Hopkins University, organized a mini-symposium at the 73rd meeting of the American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics, where researchers described the promise and fluid dynamics challenges of wind energy.
UW researchers are studying how moose cool themselves down. Wyoming Public Radio noted that the moose population in the Snowy Range is declining, and rising temperatures may be a cause.
WyoFile interviewed graduates of UW’s Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, which is among programs facing possible elimination as part of a plan to address a $42 million budget reduction in the current biennium.
Camellia Okpodu has been named UW’s new College of Arts and Sciences dean, according to The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education and Women in Academia Report.
Bachelors Degree Center named UW the No. 2 program in its “15 Best Online Bachelor’s in Counseling for 2021” list for providing “essential skills that will help the student identify specific behaviors and assist their patients in overcoming any obstacles they may face.” The website provides students a guide to traditional and online bachelor’s degree programs in all disciplines.
A survey conducted by the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center at UW found that the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the way residents chose to vote in the general election. UW Professor Jim King, the survey’s director, said nearly half of Wyoming’s residents voted early, according to Oil City News, which published UW’s release.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published an article in which UW’s Myrna Miller, an associate professor and veterinary virologist, discussed rabies being spread in northern Wyoming. Miller said the risk to humans remains low.
Reinette Tendore, director of the UW Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center, discussed with Wyoming Public Radio how she has had to use online technology to stay in touch and check on the well-being of the university’s Native student population.
Wyoming Public Radio noted that the UW Museum of Vertebrates recently created an online database of skulls and skeletons. Matt Carling, faculty curator of the museum, discussed the free public database for research. Laramie Live and My Country 95.5 Radio published UW’s release.
Sheridan Media and The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW is using a grant that will assist community efforts to identify and prepare traditional Shoshone foods on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
The UW Biodiversity Institute’s biennial Rocky Mountain Community Science Conference will take place virtually Friday, Dec. 4. The Rocket Miner published UW’s release on the community science program.
Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that three UW Department of Plant Sciences graduate students received top honors for crop and pollinator research during the virtual national annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America.
Tim Wiseman, UW’s chief risk officer, has been elected to the University Risk Management and Insurance Association Board of Directors. Security Info Center published UW’s announcement.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and The Laramie Boomerang featured a joint virtual exhibition from UW’s Art Museum and College of Law. The exhibition is titled “Dispatches from Exile.”
UW Extension has published a report that will help community leaders understand the nature of their respective county’s economy. Sheridan Media published UW Extension’s media release.
KGAB Radio and The Boomerang published UW’s release on the UW Art Museum’s 28th annual Happy Holidays virtual events Dec. 3 and 5.
