State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed in a Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) article that focused on how the Wyoming Legislature is setting aside funds to promote coal production, while some state government entities are facing severe budget cuts. He said money set aside to prop up coal is not a huge amount in the state’s overall budget, but “every dollar counts” during the current recession and pandemic. Coal Zoom also published the article.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and CS-T reported that Gov. Mark Gordon is encouraging UW students to fill the role of substitute teachers over the winter break to address the shortage of substitutes in Wyoming’s K-12 schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic. KGAB Radio published UW’s release.
Earth is hemorrhaging species, from mammals to fish and insects, according to an article in Discover Magazine. UW Associate Professor Ellen Currano, who was interviewed, commented that Earth is facing a slow mass extinction of species.
Quanta Magazine interviewed UW botany Assistant Professor Catherine Wagner about Africa’s Lake Tanganyika’s hundreds of species of cichlid fish. The article focused on the evolution of the species, which diversified from one common ancestor to 240 cichlid species in less than 10 million years.
A new survey from UW’s School of Energy Resources and the Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources explores Wyoming residents’ perspectives of energy development in the state, according to a CS-T article. Sheridan Media published UW’s release on the survey results.
KGAB Radio published UW’s release noting that UW Associate Professor Caskey Russell will discuss the history of Alaskan Native civil rights during the annual Sandeen Lecture in the Humanities today (Monday).
Second-year medical students from the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) Medical Education Program at UW recently presented their research projects as part of a virtual symposium. The Rocket Miner and The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release.
The Rocket Miner noted that UW Extension has a new publication, titled “Plants poisonous to livestock in Montana and Wyoming: Considerations for reducing production losses,” which is available online.
The new James E. and Jill S. Anderson Veteran Student Scholarship will support both undergraduate and graduate students at UW. Sheridan Media and KGAB Radio published UW’s release on the Andersons’ $1 million gift, which the university matched with $500,000.
Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that Rob Colter, an associate lecturer, is spotlighted in “How to Cope like Epictetus,” a book chapter in “The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers.”
Jeff Means, UW’s American studies and history chair, spoke with Colorado Public Radio about what state officials should do with a toppled Colorado Civil War monument connected to the Sand Creek Massacre.
