State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle republished an article that quoted a number of experts on whether Wyoming residents will get the COVID-19 vaccine. Discussing the economic side, UW economist Rob Godby said it is possible that the longer people resist being vaccinated, the longer the pandemic will last -- and the greater the economic fallout will be.

UW and the state’s seven community colleges are launching a collaborative effort to better prepare Wyoming students for the state’s evolving economy and encourage entrepreneurship. Wyoming Public Radio, Cowboy State Daily, Oil City News, Wyoming News Now, The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and KFBC Radio reported that Gov. Mark Gordon and UW President Ed Seidel announced the Wyoming Innovation Network, a joint effort by all of the schools to focus more on Wyoming’s economic needs. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Sheridan Press and Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that UW and Wyoming’s community colleges have launched a new website designed to make it easier to plan and manage college credit transfer.

A recent UW study shows how President Joe Biden’s 60-day moratorium on new oil and natural gas leases and drilling permits will affect Wyoming’s economy. According to a Wyoming Tribune Eagle article, Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow said the ban also would defund Wyoming’s public schools that rely on those tax dollars. National Public Radio, Bloomberg Law, The CS-T, Denver Business Journal and Energy in Depth published related articles citing the UW study.

Nextgov quoted Ed Synakowski, UW’s vice president for research and economic development, about a new supercomputer that will launch next year at the National Center for Atmospheric Research-Wyoming Supercomputing Center in Cheyenne. The $35 million supercomputer will help researchers study Earth system science. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published a similar article.

Matt Kauffman, director of the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit at UW, was interviewed for a Pew Charitable Trusts article on how different agencies are collaborating on using the latest technologies involving GPS-enabled collars to track big-game migration patterns in real time.

Reuters quoted UW law Professor Michael Duff, a labor relations expert, for an article focusing on the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act. The measure is a public health emergency act that shields from liability makers of “countermeasures” such as diagnostic tests, protective gear and vaccines. The PREP Act is mentioned in a nursing home death involving a COVID-19 patient, which was the focus of the article.

UW was ranked No. 6 in College Magazine’s annual list of the “Top 10 Safest Colleges and Campuses in the United States.” The ranking is based on criteria such as on-campus violent crime reported, the city’s annual violent crime and on-campus housing availability.

K2 Radio published UW’s release noting that the university will offer a limited number of free COVID-19 tests to members of the public who are not displaying symptoms of the infection beginning this week.

UW graduate Emily Wood, from Granite Canyon in Laramie County, recently received the prestigious USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s announcement.

Cowboy State Daily noted that exonerated “Central Park Five” member Yusef Salaam is next week’s Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Dialogue (MLK DOD) keynote speaker. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release announcing that political strategists Donna Brazile and Ana Navarro also will present during MLK DOD.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release noting that the six-week Entrepreneur Essentials program offered by the university and Central Wyoming College will provide Wyoming residents with knowledge and tools to be successful entrepreneurs.
