UW in the News

March 22, 2021

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that UW will continue to offer in-person learning after students return from an abbreviated spring break later this month. The decision is based on the ongoing decline in COVID-19 cases and the growing availability of vaccines to protect against the virus among the campus community. Oil City News, Wyo4News and Y95 Country published UW’s announcement.

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed for an article that appeared in Coal Zoom, titled “What’s In Store for Wyoming Coal Under Biden’s Executive Orders?” The article originally appeared in The CS-T.

Outdoor Life noted that the Wyoming Game and Fish Department collected more than 4,000 teeth from big-game animals submitted by hunters during the 2020 season. The ongoing research -- which includes UW personnel -- will be used to compile information on population dynamics and decisions about management strategies.

UW atmospheric science Assistant Professor Jeff French was interviewed by E&E News about eight states that are conducting cloud-seeding experiments in hopes of producing more moisture. Cloud-seeding research represents the cutting edge of weather and climate science, according to the E&E News article published by Scientific American.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that UW, along with community partners Ivinson Memorial Hospital and Albany County Public Health, is back on schedule administering COVID-19 vaccines to area residents after last week’s winter storm caused delay of shipments.

Bethann Garramon Merkle, the director of the Wyoming Science Communication Initiative at UW, discussed with Wyoming Public Radio on how scientists can better communicate their research for public consumption.

noted the “water bear” research of UW Assistant Professor Thomas Boothby. Boothby is researching how the microscopic animals, known as tardigrades, can withstand extreme conditions.

Laramie Live and Hits 106 published UW’s release announcing the opening of The Lodge, a spacious, heated tent on UW’s Fraternity Mall with cozy seating options, games and activities, and other amenities for students.

The UW College of Business is among 12 Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Collegiate Program consortium schools hosting a screening of the popular Netflix docudrama “The Social Dilemma” next week. KGAB Radio published UW’s announcement.

The Powell Tribune and Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that “Deer 139,” a documentary produced by the UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, premiered online last week.

An informational session for students to learn more about the 2021 Fisher Innovation Launchpad is scheduled by UW’s IMPACT 307 this week. The Rocket Miner published UW’s release.

WyoToday.com published UW’s release noting that 20 students in the Wyoming WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) Medical Education Program received their white coats in a recent ceremony.
