Through its Museum as Classroom approach, the University of Wyoming Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages, supports the academic mission of the University, assists in preparing our future workforce with essential skills, and enhances the cultural life of Wyoming’s citizens and visitors.
The Pat Guthrie Special Exhibitions Teaching Gallery presents four installations of artwork, each specific to a course taught during the Spring 2025 semester at the University of Wyoming. Faculty from a range of academic disciplines select artwork from our permanent collection to support the content and learning goals of their respective classes. This method of object-based teaching and learning invites inquiry, curiosity, and creative thinking into the student’s educational experience. This semester, we welcome students and faculty from the Department of Criminal Justice & Sociology, the School of Politics, Public Affairs, and International Studies, the Department of Music, and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Farah Al Qasimi’s Desert Dreamscape is an immersive film that explores nostalgia, longing, and the idea of "home." With a runtime of over ten hours, the film encourages slow, meditative viewing, enhanced by ambient music composed by the artist. The subtle shifts in lighting create a calming, ASMR-like atmosphere, inviting reflection on the fragility of our sense of place. With a run-time of over ten hours, the film calls for slow engagement and close looking. The patient observer is rewarded with a subtle shift in lighting as the scene transitions from daytime into night and back again, simulating the passage of several days. Visit the Art Museum to experience Desert Dreamscape in the cozy Wyoming Theater Gallery.
Harold Garde at 100: The Unseen Works in Two Acts features 100 never-before-exhibited works by the prolific Harold Garde (American, 1923-2022). This exhibition is nearly 80 years in the making, as Garde’s relationship with the University of Wyoming began in the 1940s. Paintings and works on paper from Maine, New York, and Florida were selected for Harold Garde at 100 to exemplify his distinct vision and the iconographies he returned to across decades. These recurring visuals include chairs, kimonos, puppets, pinnacles, vessels, and many examples of the strappo method developed by Garde. This expansive exhibition invites visitors to experience Garde’s dynamic brushstrokes and singular perspective.
