The New UW License Plate

The UWAA is excited to announce the Mountain Plate design is the new design of the UW license plates!

In April, thousands of UW alumni and current UW plate owners participated in voting for their favorite design. The options included two designs featuring both brown and gold elements, with one showcasing gold mountains in the background and the other featuring gold stripes on the top and bottom. Both designs prominently displayed "University of Wyoming" at the top and "GO POKES" at the bottom.

Below are some important details about the process and what comes next.

  • State Law Requirement: Wyoming law requires license plate designs to change every eight years, and the new design to be readily distinguishable from the previous design.

  • Sales Deadline: Sales of the current gold UW plate will conclude on May 31st, 2024.

  • Renewal Process: Current plate holders can conveniently renew and keep their existing number. Keep an eye out for renewal instructions from WYDOT later this year.

UW License Plate FAQ

Wyoming State Law requires the license plate design to change every eight years, and the new design must be readily distinguishable from the previous design (31-2-213 (b)).

The new design will roll out in 2025.

Absolutely. Current UW license plate holders will have the first option to retain their existing plate number in the upcoming cycle.

You'll receive correspondence from WYDOT containing a PIN number. Simply use this code on the online portal to secure your current license plate number. This code remains valid until 2026.

Once your order is placed, we'll assign you a number and ship your new plate to your county of registration promptly.

For plates not renewed in the first year of the new cycle, UWAA will begin a reassignment process in 2026.

Not at all! You don't need to be a UW alum to apply for the UW Plate. Whether you're a proud alum, a dedicated supporter, or simply a fan of UW, you're welcome to order and display these distinctive plates.

Sales of the current gold UW plate will end on May 31st, 2024. But don't worry, current plate holders can renew and keep their number. Keep an eye out for renewal information from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) later this year.

The pre-ordering portal will open in late October, 2024. This timeframe will apply to both current and new plate owners.

UW License Plate History

In 2008, the UWAA began accepting the first cycle of UW license plate applications and a brown plate was approved followed by our most recent cycle of gold plates. Now that the required 8-year cycle is completed, the mountain plates you see above will become available for renewal and purchase in 2025.

This new design marks the beginning of the third cycle of the UW license plate program, following two successful cycles that collectively sold over 14,800 plates and raised more than $1.4 million in scholarship support for UW students. The license plate program commenced in 2008.

An online system is available for new orders of the 2018 gold series plates until this current license plate cycle ends on May 31st, 2024. You can also order your license plate and pay by check through this application PDF.

Any vehicle or motorcycle registered in Wyoming is eligible to receive the UW plate.
