JUROR'S STATEMENT | 45TH ANNUAL JURIED UW STUDENT EXHIBITION

Mandy Vink, Guest Juror

Public Arts Administrator, City of Boulder Arts and Culture, CO

February 2020

Without external reference, the world presents itself in perfect clarity.

– James Galvin (from “Two Horses and a Dog”)

This juried exhibition reflects place and the human experience specific to this place, where an arid wind and sun constantly weather and prematurely age. Through a breadth of technique, material specificity, and a strong aesthetic signatures, works included are clean and concise.

Take time to consider the use of space. Thematically you may find its incorporation as significant as the rendered content in these compositions. These works are not lavishly embellished, nor are they obligated to be perfectly expected arrangements filling the frames from edge to edge. It seems this landscape is so embedded that it is inevitably and pervasively present in this body of work. Collectively and individually, the works of this exhibition narrate the intrinsic beauty and implicit harshness of these high plains over time and place.

Artists included in this annual student exhibition represent a mix of undergraduate, graduate, or post doctoral student attending any college or outreach school that is registered for classes during the spring 2020 semester at the University of Wyoming. With over 150 submissions, works not included in this exhibition are on view in the Salon des Refusés in the Visual Arts Building.
